“Third Term-itis”

After recent allegations and scrutiny, Hillary Clinton has been sympathized by many people. Some say she is going to have a tough time bouncing back; some say she will leave the running completely. However, Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Senator, does not consider herself among those people. Graham believes that Clinton is going to remain strong since she is a “talented…tough” woman that will raise “a lot of money”.

The only problem is, she says, that she is running for the 3rd year of democrats in charge. She explains her reasoning with the term, “Third Term-itis”, which basically means that after 2 democratic presidential terms, the people are tired and want to “move forward”, especially if things are not going as they’d hoped. As many have mentioned, she represents the 3rd term for Barack Obama and even her husband, Bill Clinton. The best thing her opponent can do now is learn to be innovative, have a new perspective on the nation, and expect Hillary to come back strong.

Request for Transparency

Senator Elizabeth Warren is known to have a great relationship with Obama and his administration, except when it comes down to the topic of Obama’s new trade deal. Warren argues that the administration is being incredibly opaque about their new deal and doing so is keeping “the American people in the dark”. Agreed, Ms. Warren. I don’t think citizens should be kept in the dark at all, but maybe Obama is trying to figure out all the logistics before he can make it a big deal to the public. (Just a thought) Warren continues to argue that “jobs will be shipped overseas and environmental and labor laws might be watered down”. Obama, however, disagrees. President Obama expressed that Warren’s allegations are incorrect.

Poll: Do you think Lynch’s delay is reasonable?

I found myself in the Allen building today, so I figured, hmm, why not conduct a poll in the most political building of campus. The Allen building is home to almost all Political Scientists here at Texas A&M University, as well as the hangout spot for a large number of political science students. I asked two students their opinion on the delay of Loretta Lynch’s vote for Attorney General. Here are their responses:

Simrita Chamdal, Senior Political Science Major-

“I think it’s ridiculous. I think the Senate is being stubborn. Why on earth has it taken them so long to make a decision? It’s quite simple actually, if she has enough votes–swear her in. If not, move on. But they’ve got to get passed their big egos. The “reasons” they’re delaying is for more “important matters” that “take priority” over Lynch’s nomination. But let’s be real, these “important matters” will never be resolved in a quick minute. They require thoughtful deliberation and careful consideration. However, Lynch’s position is a quick matter. Count the votes, swear her in. That’s all I have to say about it.”

Alexis Orrego, Junior Political Science Major-

“I’m over it. I used to be against Lynch being the next Attorney General. Call me sexist if you want, but I didn’t want it. But at this point, I just want to stop hearing about it. I log on to any political website and it’s still in the news. I look at any newspaper…still in the news. I turn on the tv, oh look there she is again. I’m tired of it. I don’t care if it’s Lynch anymore, just get it over with it. There is absolutely no reason that it should take 160+ days before they can announce their decision for Attorney General. That hasn’t happened since when? The Reagan Days? The fact that so many years have passed by and this country still hasn’t moved passed these kinds of things is appalling to me. It’s an era of change and we can start here. The Senate just needs to swear her in already.”

Embarrassed Obama

President Barack Obama grilled the US Senate on Friday for delaying Loretta Lynch’s bid to be the newest attorney general. This wait has been the longest wait a nominee has had to wait in the last 3 decades. That is crazy talk! Obama declared, “…get her confirmed, let her do her job. This is embarrassing.” President Obama also continued to say that sometimes the Senate just goes too far in being dysfunctional. If she is elected Loretta Lynch will be the first African American WOMAN to lead the Justice Department, but here we are, 160 days after her nomination by President Barack Obama.

This delay has gone on way too long. I feel, you Obama.

Clinton’s Campaign Video

HILLARY IS RUNNING FOR PRES, Y’ALL.

The Pros: Trying to ease herself out of the shadow of her husband, Bill Clinton, and the current President, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton’s campaign video is clearly expressing the importance of her campaign being FOR the people, and for ALL the people. In her announcement video, Clinton is only seen for about 10 seconds at the end while the entirtiy of the video captures the heartfelt moments between American citiziens. Not once do we see Clinton publicizing her own family, but presenting the American people to the American people–a language that we all understand. Whites, blacks, Asians, boys, girls, seniors, babies, gays, lesbians, big, small, interracial– every single type of person you can imagine in this beautiful country was portrayed in this video. She didn’t leave one person out, appealing to the entire nation, rather than just a specific group of people.

The Cons: Hillary is seen at the end, appearing almost abruptly, in a suit with no people around her. She begins talking about her campaign, which is fine, but it almost seems as if she is putting herself above all the people in her video. The way her voiceover is done makes it seem a bit cliche and her speech is a bit bold. There isn’t much compassion in her voice and it just sort of ruined the nice video for me.

Nonetheless, it was a good campaign video. But the best? Unlikely. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the candidates videos. Watch Hillary’s video here.

Goodbye, Clinton Foundation

Hillary Clinton has informed staff members of the Clinton Foundation that she will no longer serve on the board in lieu of her desire to run for President. She reassured all that she trusts she is leaving the Foundation in good hands and can only expect greatness from the remaining staff. In coincidence (as discussed in a previous blog post), the Foundation had received incredible backlash when people found out they were receiving help from foreign countries. It is unclear if this is the reason she is leaving or if she is leaving because she actually wants to prioritize her presidential campaign over the foundation (which would make sense), but best of luck to her in endeavors regardless of her reasoning.

A Game of Would You Rather: Interview

Today, I decided to do an interview with one of my closest friends Andrea Castro. Andrea is a junior Women and Gender’s Study major at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX.  So the way this is going to work is I’m going to list out the questions I asked her, and then the corresponding responses after. I formatted the game in the form of “would you rather” just to make it more interesting and fun! (That way she would actually want to play and not be held there against her will) Okay, so here we go! These are the questions:

1. Would you rather live in a country where everyone has equal tax cuts or in a country where taxes are based on income?

Answer: I think taxation should reflect fairly upon all citizens. I think those who need help should be given help because that’s the humane thing to do. I don’t think that all people are deserving, but why should those who are suffer for those who aren’t? The rich have money to last them a lifetime. Sharing is caring, people.

2. Would you rather be aware of the sugar intake of your food products or blindly eat the food you want regardless of the labeling?

Answer: I would definitely want to know what I’m eating. I’m cautious about my diet because my family doesn’t have the best genes with disease. If I choose to buy a product, I’m trusting that company to tell me the entire truth of what is going into my body. I’m entitled to it. There’s no question about it.

3. Would you rather be paid $10.50 at McDonald’s or $7.25 as an office clerk?

Answer: Honestly, I would hate to say this, but I would work at McDonald’s. There is no way I can live a happy, promising, and comfortable life on a wage of $7.25. So even if I have to sacrifice my pride, I will take McDonald’s over a nice office. And this all comes down to the minimum wage standards being so skewed.

4. Would you rather have a female president that is insufficient or a male president who is overly arrogant? (This is a personality test)

Answer: The feminist woman in me would want to have a female president regardless, but if it’s in the worst interest of the nation, there’s nothing wrong with having a male president. History can be made later–with a better candidate. This country needs a leader that can execute what they promise and listen to what the people want. If the female can’t provide us with that, we’re going to vote for the male.

THE RESULTS: ANDREA CASTRO SHOULD VOTE FOR HILLARY CLINTON.

Ex-Attorney General for Senate

WORK, GIRL.

Catherine Masto, an Ex-Attorney General from Nevada, has declared a desire to succeed Harry Reid’s position as senator since he is retiring this year. Masto explains she is “running for the Senate to continue my work standing up for Nevada seniors, consumers, homeowners, women and children”– very feminist of her, if I may say so myself. With this bid, if elected, Catherine Masto would be the first Latina elected to the Senate. (YAY FOR DIVERSITY WAHOO HOORAY PROGRESS YES FANTASTIC) And so far, Catherine Masto is declared to be the “strongest candidate” for the position, according to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Props, Ms.

Catherine Cortez Masto, a Democrat and former attorney general in Nevada, announced Wednesday that she is running to succeed Senator Harry Reid.

Chipotle for Lunch!

What do you know!? Politicians are normal people too!! Wowzers, Hillary Clinton and I could possibly be best friends. You know what one of my favorite places to eat is? CHIPOTLE. You know where HC was spotted eating lunch? CHIPOTLE. Omg it’s almost like a match made in heaven! In Ohio on Monday, Clinton apparently stopped for lunch at a Chipotle and word got out. However, when journalist Maggie Haberman called the manager, he deemed her wrongly notified. BUT the one who was wrong was the manager! When they pulled up footage, it’s true, HC was ordering a chicken burrito, undercover with big black shades in a red jacket. She ordered a chicken burrito, like me! She also has the same initials, HC, like me! Yay us.
